Libero Mureddu

Improviser, pianist, composer, and music technologist based in Helsinki, Finland

Born in Milan in 1975 and based in Helsinki since 2003, Libero Mureddu is a versatile musician and researcher currently pursuing an artistic doctorate at the MuTri Doctoral School at the Sibelius Academy. His research focuses on the role of embodied knowledge in free improvisation performance, supported by the Kone Foundation.

With over twenty years of experience in contemporary, experimental, jazz, and popular music, Libero leads the murmur trio and is involved in innovative projects like ‘The Avatars and I’, ‘Sonic Avatars’, ‘Joy Against the Machine’, three composition-improvisation frameworks that blend improvisation, composition, music technology, and visuals to expose and challenge the improviser’s embodied knowledge.

He teaches contemporary-free and electroacoustic improvisation at the Sibelius Academy. Libero Mureddu is the Sibelius Academy’s representative of the METRIC (Modernising European Higher Music Education through Improvisation) network. Libero Mureddu has co-designed the Experimental Sounding Finland calendar to strengthen the creative sound community in Finland.
